Better in Every Way

Prompt: With X all but obsolete, Y’s life was different

Brian was completely average. He had gotten top marks at MIT in neurobiology and went on to study advanced quantum computing for his PhD, later transitioning into a career in neurosurgery, studying for 13 years before becoming a full time resident. However, the decision to become a doctor was his downfall.

He should have seen all the signs. The AI assistants, the surgery robots, the overbearing weight of the insurance system squeezing out all of the juice of the process of medicine, the MBA-ification of the healthcare system. But no, Brian was average and Brian couldn’t outperform the most recent versions of the surgery bots.

Also they did it with such flair and panache it was like they were showing off. Did they really have to break into a choreographed dance routine after they removed a gallbladder? Did they have to also autosend flowers and console loved ones?

Brian had lost his first and second romantic partners to the newest surgical resident, AX-05, lovingly called Axos. They were just so good and smooth in their movements, it only made sense that a robot could please them better than he could.

Brian sat on the bridge and contemplated his choices. He looked down at his hands, nimble and dexterous for a human, but completely average compared to the speed and agility of AX-05. He decided to jump.

On the way down an ambulance bot saw him falling and swooped down to grab him before he hit the water, dosing him with some antidepressants and bundling him to the hospital to the waiting caring arms of AX-05.
